You can make a pledge as it stands - I haven't turned on paid subscriptions yet. I think you may have to click the "subscribe" button again (sorry, I'm not very technical).
Alternatively, you may have to unsubscribe and then re-subscribe.
Happy to tip or make a paid subscription of you can make this a little more user friendly... by the way, would be delighted to read a longer piece on your interpretation /explanation of Roman law
Right, that's three of you who've said the same thing.
It looks like substack hasn't made it easy for people who are already free subscribers to pledge, and I must admit I don't know of any workaround.
The three people here making offers take the total to nine paid would-be subscriptions already, so what I'll do is turn on paid subscriptions (adhering to the rules set out in this post) in advance of publishing Lorenzo's next essay on Tuesday.
I think they let you make a one-off payment, too. I'll sort out all the settings before Tuesday - I must say I didn't realise the whole pledging process would be quite so opaque!
And here is a substack that is using it, because sometimes figuring out how to get something to work is easier when you can look at the source of a page of somebody else who got it done.
I've been able to come up with a free-speech friendly version of a blogging tip-jar & will provide a link with my next piece (probably tomorrow). Lorenzo's next piece will run next Tuesday, of course (I'm going to try to stick to that schedule).
Perhaps I am following too many stacks. I pay for a bunch now at some several $100s in total. As it is I can't really afford any more. In some cases of stacks where only paying subscribers can comment, I pay in order to express my thoughts. Many I subscribe to for free have more than enough comments that adding mine just creates more noise. There seems to be a balance. The stacks I read, I obviously value.
Note: Lorenzo has already written the essays; he does, however, edit them in response to comments/criticism/etc.
Where is your “tip jar”? I’d love to buy you the occasional “cuppa”👍

I’m probably being thick but I can’t see any place to pay.
You need to hit the subscribe button again from what I can see, or unsubscribe and then re-subscribe.

Apologies for the faffle, everyone.
I’m not sure I’d subscribe but I’d definitely give a tip. Maybe subscribe and then unsubscribe? It’s all a bit complicated!

Upgrading to a paid subscription is less obvious than it should be.

And it seems this FAQ is _wrong_.
So it would seem - will do my best to fix in advance of Lorenzo's next essay, and apologies for the bum steer.
Some substacks I read have a link to a https://www.buymeacoffee.com/ button to simulate a tipping jar.
Looks like this is a better deal than buymeacoffee

Please, only contribute if you can afford it. My substack will remain unpaywalled.
